Covalency of the Hydrogen Bond in Ice: A Direct X-Ray Measurement
نویسندگان
چکیده
Periodic intensity variations in the measured Compton profile anisotropies of ordinary ice Ih correspond to distances of 1.72 and 2.85 Å, which are close to the hydrogen bond length and the nearestneighbor O-O distance, respectively. We interpret this result as direct evidence for the substantial covalent nature of the hydrogen bond. Very good quantitative agreement between the data and a fully quantum mechanical bonding model for ice Ih and the disagreement with a purely electrostatic (classical) bonding model support this interpretation and demonstrate how exquisitely sensitive Compton scattering is to the phase of the electronic wave function. Solvation dependence of valence electronic states of water diluted in organic solvents probed by soft X-ray spectroscopy.
Knowledge of hydrogen bonds is important in a wide range of scientific fields. However, information on the electronic state of hydrogen bonded molecules in liquids and solutions is still limited. We applied X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy to observe the electronic state around oxygen of water and investigate the solvent dependence of occupied and unoccupied valence electronic states ...
متن کاملElectronic structure contribution to hydrogen bonding interaction of a water dimer
Hydrogen bond (H-bond) covalency has recently been observed in ice and liquid water, while the penetrating molecular orbitals (MOs) in the H-bond region of most typical water dimer system, (H2O)2, have also been discovered. However, obtaining the quantitative contribution of these MOs to the H-bond interaction is still problematic. In this work, we introduced the orbital-resolved electron densi...
متن کاملEvidence for Halogen Bond Covalency in Acyclic and Interlocked Halogen-Bonding Receptor Anion Recognition
The synthesis and anion binding properties of novel halogen-bonding (XB) bis-iodotriazole-pyridinium-containing acyclic and [2]catenane anion host systems are described. The XB acyclic receptor displays selectivity for acetate over halides with enhanced anion recognition properties compared to the analogous hydrogen-bonding (HB) acyclic receptor. A reversal in halide selectivity is observed in ...
متن کاملSulfur K-edge XAS and DFT calculations on P450 model complexes: effects of hydrogen bonding on electronic structure and redox potentials.
Hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) is generally thought to play an important role in tuning the electronic structure and reactivity of metal-sulfur sites in proteins. To develop a quantitative understanding of this effect, S K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has been employed to directly probe ligand-metal bond covalency, where it has been found that protein active sites are significantly le...
متن کاملOn the electronic nature of low-barrier hydrogen bonds in enzymatic reactions.
The electronic nature of low-barrier hydrogen bonds (LBHBs) in enzymatic reactions is discussed based on combined low temperature neutron and x-ray diffraction experiments and on high level ab initio calculations by using the model substrate benzoylacetone. This molecule has a LBHB, as the intramolecular hydrogen bond is described by a double-well potential with a small barrier for hydrogen tra...
